Pig Farm Consultant in Vietnam

Lee Chafer, pig farm consultant in Vietnam

Lee Chafer is an independent pig farm consultant in Vietnam, working with farm owners, investors and lenders across Vietnam and China from his base in Phitsanulok, Thailand. Before consulting, he spent more than 20 years running pig farms himself in the UK, USA, Ireland and Russia. That ranges from a 1,200-sow farrow-to-finish unit to a 6,000-sow multi-site group and a 50,000-head finishing complex for Smithfield Foods.

Results from the farm floor

  • PSY raised by 6.5 pigs to 27.9 within 12 months on a UK unit, through the Rescue Deck and staff retraining.
  • PSY raised from 18.8 to 23.4 on a 1,200-sow farm in the USA.
  • 25% cut in vaccine and medication costs across a 6,000-sow business in Ireland.
  • Over 2 tonnes sold per sow, against a UK average of 1,650 kg.
  • Finalist, UK Pig Farmer of the Year 2019.
  • Hands-on ASF biosecurity on farms in Southern Russia: site zoning, disinfection, and control of staff and vehicle movement.

What pig specialists who worked with Lee say

“Since Lee has been working on the unit, many of the management functions were improved which has resulted in improved performance… the herd is now one of the most financially competent units I visit. Lee is innovative, a hard worker, organised and a leader constantly wanting and achieving better performance.”

Neville Kingston MRCVS, pig veterinarian and partner, Garth Partnership, UK (2012)

“He made very significant improvements in production levels while operating in a tough economic environment. The structural and operational changes he instilled during his management period are still reaping benefits for the company today… In my opinion he will generate significant operational and financial dividends for any company.”

Michael McKeon, Regional Pig Specialist, Teagasc (Ireland’s Agriculture and Food Development Authority), who worked with Lee from 2012 to 2013

What a pig farm consultant in Vietnam can do for you

For investors and lenders. Before you finance or buy a farm, and while your money is in it, you need to know what is really there. An independent pig farm audit takes about two days on site and ends with a written report: findings, risk ratings and recommended actions. It checks:

  • herd numbers and production records against reported figures
  • biosecurity and African swine fever (ASF) risk
  • building condition and true capacity against what was financed or advertised
  • management, staffing and cost of production against benchmarks

For farm owners. If the farm is producing less than it should or costing more than it should, Lee finds the cause in the barn and fixes it with your team. That production consulting covers PSY, FCR, mortality, feed and medication costs, turnarounds of struggling sites, and staff training and SOPs.

Lee is independent. He takes no commission from feed, genetics or equipment suppliers, and reports only to the client who hires him. If you are looking for a swine consultant who has run the farms himself, not just advised on them, this is the work he has done for two decades.
