Multi-Site Pig Farm Management and Structuring

Running several pig farms is a different job from running one. Pigs move between sites, feed and supplies have to arrive on time at each, and the owner needs to see which site is making money and which is not. Without a clear structure, problems on one site spread to the others, and nobody can say where the losses are.

What I help with

  • Reporting. The same weekly figures from every site, in the same format, so sites can be compared and problems spotted early.
  • Cost-centre accountability. Each site and stage with its own costs and output, and a manager responsible for them.
  • Pig flow between sites. Breeding, nursery and finishing capacity matched, so pigs move at the right age and weight and no site is overstocked or empty.
  • Biosecurity between sites. Rules for people, vehicles and pigs moving between farms, so one outbreak does not become several.
  • Workflow and supply. Who does what, when, on each site; feed, medicine and supply deliveries coordinated across the group.
  • Management structure. Site managers, a production manager over them, and clear lines of responsibility.

Experience

I have done this job myself: as group production manager of a 6,000-sow multi-site operation in Ireland, as multi-site farm manager for a great-grandparent (GGP) and production group in southern Russia, and as complex production manager for a large producer in the USA. In the Irish group, vaccine and medication spend fell by 25%.

How it works

  1. A first call about the group, its sites and what is not working.
  2. A review of current reports and figures, then visits to the sites.
  3. A written recommendation on structure, reporting and pig flow.
  4. Support putting it in place, with training and SOPs for the site teams where needed.
